Hello friends! I’m Steven, a teacher/entrepreneur/hiker, and a father as well. I’ve been living & working in Beijing for 20 years. Numerous historical sights, widely diverse ethnic cultures, delicious cuisine and vibrant nightlife make Beijing one of China’s best getaways. Desert, mountains, plateau meadow, beaches are all accessible in several hours from Beijing. Fortunately I have been hiking or camping in all these various landscapes. But today I want to talk about something else – hiking the Great Wall. I’m a passionate Great Wall lover. I hiked most sections of the Great Wall in Beijing area many times on my own in the last ten years. I have been hiking the Great Wall with 500+ hikers from 30+ countries all over the world since 2011. Hiking the Great Wall and knowing new friends from all over the world make a big fun.
Shixia is a peaceful village beside a ramshackle stretch of the Great Wall. Although just over an hour from Beijing, it is rarely visited by tourists – we’ll hike undisturbed along the wall for hours and return to cold beers and a meal prepared by our hospitable host at a cozy courtyard.
The hike itself is a good workout but nothing too strenuous, roughly 4-5 hours in total with plenty of time to stop and take photos. The maximum elevation is about 1136 meters. We will take our time climbing up and down and make sure that we have a relaxing and enjoyable visit. There are alternate routes around the steepest climbs allowing the hikers to adapt their activity to suit their hiking level. Sitting atop the watchtowers along the way, you could hear nothing but the wind.
Typically we depart at 8 am and return to Beijing by 3 pm. I guide and company with you throughout the entire journey.
The Great Wall in this area is home to a diverse range of animals, large as well as small. You’ll have a chance to see interesting species like butterfly, spider, grasshopper, fox, African hoopoe, dione ratsnake and common pheasant etc.
Some expats living in Beijing told me that Shixia is one of places which is worth for them to visit repeatedly every year.
We’ll go to Shixia Great Wall. It’s totally different from Mutianyu or Zhuangdaokou. You’ll have a unique experience on 2 totally different parts of the Great Wall in one day. We will start hiking on a restored section, then switch to a section which was built 500 years ago. There are few tourists going to that place. We’ll enjoy the original walls, peaceful nature, fresh air, a local feast after hike as well.
