This is an experience you won’t forget. It’s not easy at all, it requires a lot of strength and stamina. Be sure and have good hiking boots and long pants on. Stephen is very knowledgeable and passionate about hiking the entire Great Wall. So you couldn’t ask for a better guide to lead you. If you seek a more challenging multi day or leisurely one day stroll on the wall, Stephen is the one to reach out to.

The night hike with Steven was the highlight of my trip to Beijing, hands down! I am not a big fan of touristy crowds, hence decided to do a night hike to see the wall when its relatively peaceful, and to catch the sun rise; was totally taken by pleasant surprise by Steven’s great hospitality. He was on time to pick me up at the subway station, from where we took the bus and a car to a village. We stayed overnight in this village with a local family where I was encouraged to make dumplings, and eat to my heart’s delight! The stay was extremely comfortable and the room was very clean. We started our hike at 4 in the morning. Steven provides all the equipment and also food, so there is practically nothing you will need to worry about. The trail was adventurous and I would recommend it to those who are looking for some real hiking experience, and a once-in-a-lifetime (for some) experience of catching the glorious sun rise on the Great Wall! Steven shared a lot of stories, not only about the history of the wall, but also his personal experiences. He has hiked a lot of kilometres of the Great Wall, and is looking forward to add more kilometres in his pocket. His experience and knowledge made the hike very enriching. I was traveling solo and I must emphasise that I felt completely safe as a woman, both during the hike and during my stay. Infact, Steven and I also discussed about the importance and relevance of women’s safety and education on the hike. I was genuinely touched and impressed by his hospitality! The food made by Mrs Wang (the local village host) was amazing. Interestingly, we had a little dog (belonging to the local family – the Wang’s – we stayed with at night), who also hiked the 9.5 km with us. I would count this as one of the most cherished travel experiences I have had so far and would totally recommend it if you’d like to have a complete experience of the wall! Will hopefully come back, and hike more areas of the wall! Thank you, Steven! I wish you all the best! 🙂
